Planning happens before the weather is known

A game plan is assembled across a week, while a reliable picture of conditions arrives only in the final days before the contest. Staff therefore build with a forecast rather than with conditions, and the plan carries whatever assumptions the forecast contained at the time. If the weather moderates, the team may still be operating with a plan built for something harsher, since the alternative material was never installed.

That lag explains why a side sometimes plays conservatively in benign conditions that everybody watching can see are benign. Judging the call sheet requires knowing what the staff expected rather than what eventually turned up.

Wind is directional and therefore asymmetric

A strong wind does not affect both ends of a field equally, which means the same play has different value depending on which direction it is run. Deep passing into the wind loses distance and accuracy, while the same throw with the wind gains distance and becomes harder to place precisely. Kicking is affected most, since a kicker's range contracts sharply against the wind and the decision to attempt a kick changes accordingly.

Because ends are exchanged between periods, a team's options change on a schedule that has nothing to do with how the contest is developing. Coaches plan around that schedule explicitly, choosing when to be aggressive based on which direction they will be facing.

Cold and wet change handling first

Low temperatures reduce the sensitivity of the hands and make the ball harder to grip cleanly, which raises the risk on every exchange. Wet conditions compound the effect, and the combination shifts a plan towards concepts involving fewer exchanges and shorter throws. Running games become relatively more attractive, though footing on a deteriorating surface also reduces the effectiveness of cuts and lateral movement.

The net effect is a narrower plan concentrated on plays that tolerate imprecision, which is a rational response to raised variance. It also produces contests that look conservative and are actually well-calibrated to the risk each call carries.

Surface behaviour matters as much as the sky

Field conditions depend on the surface type, on drainage and on how much use the field has had in the days before the contest. A natural surface saturated by rain loses footing progressively, and the deterioration is uneven, concentrating in the most heavily used areas. Synthetic surfaces drain differently and change less across a contest, which means the same forecast produces different practical conditions at different venues.

Footwear choices are made accordingly, and getting them wrong is a genuine competitive cost that shows up in cutting and acceleration. None of this is visible on a broadcast, which shows a field that looks broadly similar regardless of what is happening underfoot.

Reading a weather-affected fixture

Previewing a contest expected to be played in difficult conditions means asking which side's approach depends most on precision. A team relying on timing-based passing concepts loses more than one built around physical running and field position management. It also means expecting a lower volume of scoring opportunities, which raises the influence of each one and increases overall variance.

Higher variance systematically narrows the gap between teams, which is worth holding in mind before any confident expectation is formed. The forecast is therefore a genuine input into a preview rather than a piece of colour attached to the end of it.
