Grip is built by running

A circuit begins a weekend with a surface that has been washed by weather and used by nothing, which offers noticeably less grip than it will later. As cars run, rubber is deposited along the racing line, and that layer increases the friction available to every car that follows. The process is cumulative across sessions, so lap times fall through a weekend for reasons unconnected to any change in the cars.

This makes comparisons between sessions unreliable, since a time set on a green surface is not equivalent to one set on a rubbered track. Teams account for it constantly, and observers who do not end up drawing conclusions about pace that the surface alone explains.

Evolution is uneven

Rubber accumulates where cars actually drive, which means the improvement is concentrated on the racing line and largely absent a metre either side. That concentration is what makes overtaking off-line difficult, since a car stepping outside the rubbered path finds substantially less grip. Different corners evolve at different rates depending on how much energy the tyre puts through the surface at that point.

Slow corners with heavy traction demands rubber up quickly, while fast corners taken with less slip accumulate more slowly. The circuit therefore changes shape in a sense, with the balance between its sections shifting across a weekend.

Weather resets progress

Rain washes rubber from the surface, which returns the circuit close to its starting condition and discards the evolution already achieved. A weekend interrupted by rain therefore contains several partial evolutions rather than one continuous improvement, complicating every comparison. Temperature has a related effect, since a cool surface holds rubber differently and the same accumulated layer offers different grip.

Wind changes the effective aerodynamic balance of a car through particular corners and can shift where a driver is losing time from session to session. None of these are stable, which is why setup work chases a moving target throughout a weekend.

Session order distributes the benefit

Because the surface improves through a session, cars running later generally encounter more grip than those running earlier. Where a session determines starting order, that timing effect is a genuine competitive factor distributed by rules rather than by merit. Formats attempt to manage this by controlling when cars may run, though the underlying asymmetry cannot be removed entirely.

Teams plan their running to be on track at the most favourable moment, which is a strategic decision made with incomplete information about rivals. The visible result is a pattern of cars waiting in the pit lane, which looks like inactivity and is a considered choice about surface conditions.

Reading times across a weekend

Comparing lap times between sessions requires accounting for evolution, fuel load, tyre compound and the specific conditions at the moment each was set. Because those factors move together, apparently large gaps frequently dissolve once the context is included, and small ones occasionally grow. Teams perform this correction internally and rarely share it, which is why public interpretation of practice running is so often wrong.

The most reliable public signal is consistency across a run rather than any single time, since a run reveals degradation that one lap cannot. Watching runs rather than times is the single change that most improves an outside reading of a weekend.
