The cost is in the recovery

The energy in a rally is spent less on striking the ball than on stopping, turning and returning to a position from which the next ball can be reached. How much that costs depends on the surface, since some allow a controlled slide that dissipates momentum gradually and others require the legs to absorb it. Arresting momentum through the legs is metabolically expensive and mechanically demanding, and the cost accumulates across every direction change in a match.

This is why an identical pattern of shots can feel routine on one court and punishing on another without either player changing anything. Any assessment of how a match will unfold has to price the movement cost before considering the shots themselves.

Sliding changes the geometry

On a surface permitting a reliable slide, a player can commit further towards a wide ball because the slide provides a predictable way of stopping. That extra commitment enlarges the effective court, which means an attacking shot has to be more precise to finish a point outright. It also changes the recovery path, since a player emerging from a slide is already oriented back towards the middle of the court.

On surfaces where sliding is unreliable, the same wide ball forces a hard stop and a separate push back, which takes longer and costs more. The difference in effective court size explains much of why the same player appears more or less exposed on different surfaces.

Bounce height changes the strike zone

A surface producing a higher bounce gives the returning player more time but forces contact above the comfortable strike zone for many techniques. A lower bounce compresses time and demands earlier preparation, which suits players whose backswing is compact and punishes those who take a long one. Neither is universally easier, since each rewards a different technical profile and each punishes a different one.

The interaction with movement is what matters, because a high bounce on a slow surface produces long rallies while a low bounce on a fast one produces short ones. Reading a court therefore means considering pace and bounce together, since either one alone gives a misleading picture.

Point length follows from the cost

The distribution of point lengths at a tournament is largely determined by how expensive it is to defend, which is a property of the surface. Where defence is cheap, more balls come back, points extend and the physical demand shifts from explosiveness towards sustained repeated effort. Where defence is expensive, points end sooner, and the demand shifts towards short bursts with longer recovery between them.

Those two demands favour different players, which is the mechanism behind the persistent surface preferences visible across careers. It also means scheduling a long match on a defensive surface has different consequences for the next round than the same match elsewhere.

Adapting a pattern rather than abandoning it

Players rarely change their preferred patterns between surfaces, since those patterns are built over years and cannot be replaced within a short season. What changes is the margin, meaning how close to the lines the pattern is executed and how early in a rally the player commits to it. A pattern that works with modest margins on a fast surface may need tighter execution on a slow one to produce the same effect.

Tighter execution raises the error rate, which is why the same approach yields a different balance of winners and errors across surfaces. Understanding that adjustment explains far more about surface performance than any claim about a player simply preferring one court.
