A racing championship visiting many countries has to move an enormous quantity of equipment between them on a fixed schedule. The calendar is shaped by that constraint more than most spectators realise.

The freight problem sets the sequence

Each team transports cars, spares, tools, garage equipment and hospitality between rounds, and the total volume across a paddock is measured in aircraft loads.

Sea freight is far cheaper but takes weeks, so series operate multiple duplicate sets of equipment that travel by ship ahead of time to distant regions.

Air freight covers what cannot be duplicated, and the turnaround between consecutive races determines how much has to fly rather than sail.

Regional grouping is the obvious optimisation

Racing in one region across consecutive weekends avoids intercontinental flights between rounds, cutting cost and giving personnel a stable time zone for several weeks.

Calendars have been progressively reorganised on this principle, though it competes with weather windows, national holidays and long-standing contractual dates.

Some events are effectively fixed points because of their history or their weather requirements, and the rest of the calendar is arranged around them.

Personnel are the binding constraint

Mechanics and engineers travel to every round, work long hours through each weekend and then move immediately to the next location, often across several time zones.

Rest requirements and staff rotation have become formal subjects of negotiation, because the calendar has expanded while the workforce has not.

Series now impose factory shutdown periods and limits on consecutive events, which are calendar constraints originating entirely in workload rather than logistics.

Broadcast timing pulls in another direction

Start times are set to suit the largest audiences, which frequently means racing early or late locally so that a distant market gets a convenient hour.

This affects track temperature and light, both of which have genuine competitive consequences, so a broadcast decision becomes a sporting variable.

Where the local audience is large, series resist this, and the compromise usually depends on how much of the event's revenue comes from the gate.

What this means for travelling supporters

Regional grouping makes it possible for a supporter to attend two nearby rounds on one trip, which several fan travel operators now build packages around.

It also means the calendar's shape is announced late, since freight planning and contract negotiations continue well after supporters would like to book travel.

Long-standing events with fixed dates are consequently the ones with the largest travelling audiences, because they can be planned around a year ahead.
