Stadium crowds often respond a beat late to the play that decided a match, because recognition depends on information that arrives after the action itself.

Watch a crowd closely and the noise rarely coincides exactly with the moment that mattered. The delay is informative, because it shows what the crowd was actually responding to.
Recognition requires confirmation
A crowd does not react to a shot but to the ball crossing the line, and in ambiguous cases it waits for the referee, the net or the scoreboard.
That produces a visible hesitation in situations where the outcome is unclear, and the noise builds gradually as confirmation spreads through the stands.
Sections nearest the incident react first and the sound travels outward, which is why a large stadium's reaction has an audible shape rather than a single onset.
The play that decided the match is rarely the loudest
Matches are frequently settled by an earlier passage that removed an option or forced a substitution, and nothing about that moment signals its importance at the time.
Crowds respond to salience, meaning goals, near misses and fouls, rather than to consequence, which is only visible once the rest of the match has happened.
Analysts working backwards from the result identify these turning points afterwards, and the crowd's muted response to them at the time is entirely rational.

Where decisions are reviewed by officials off the field, the crowd's reaction is deliberately suspended, and celebration restarts only when a decision is announced.
This has changed stadium behaviour materially, producing a second, more conditional celebration and occasionally a reversal from delight to fury within a minute.
Venues now manage this explicitly with screen messaging, because a crowd left without information during a long review fills the gap with its own conclusions.
Anticipation runs ahead in some sports
In sports where the decisive action is slow enough to see coming, crowds react before the event, and the noise rises as a situation develops rather than after it resolves.
A long ball into a dangerous area or a driver closing on a rival through a corner produces anticipatory noise that peaks before anything has been decided.
The contrast between anticipatory and confirmatory reaction is one of the clearest differences between sports, and it shapes what each feels like to attend.
Why broadcasters chase the crowd sound
Effects microphones are placed to capture the reaction rather than the play, because the crowd's response is the fastest available signal that something significant happened.
Directors use it to cut, and viewers use it to know where to look, which means the crowd is doing editorial work for an audience it cannot see.
That dependence is why matches played in empty grounds felt so unfamiliar, since the layer of information carried by crowd noise was simply missing.
